Yoho

After 5 days of camping and hiking followed by a 13 hour drive home, I don't really have the energy to edit photos just yet. Here's a couple quick RAW converts from Yoho National Park:

Camping in the Rockies

Saturday, August 25, 2007

After a long summer working in the bush, I'm finally done for the season and back at home in Vancouver. Surely, I've had enough of the outdoors life for one year? Not quite. For the next week, I'll be chasing sunrises, elk and waterfalls in the national parks of the Canadian Rockies.

Check back in a week for the photos; until then, heres a few shots from the last time I ventured into a national park. All photos taken in 2005 with my first camera: my trusty old Canon A75. I thought about re-editing these before posting, but I think it's kinda fun to see how far my photography has come in the past 2 years...

See you in a week... Full Post and Comments

Goat!

Thursday, August 16, 2007

About a month ago, I wrote in one of my posts that I never see any wildlife in the field, and had to settle on shooting spiders instead. Well, today I got lucky and happened upon an elusive mountain goat, but I sure wish I had a longer lens for wildlife shots. The first image is a 3 megapixel crop; the second, 6. Please, Pentax... hurry up with that DA* 300 4.0 (and send one my way...)!

Soon after taking these photos, the goat saw me and vanished over the edge of a cliff. I should've taken a photo of his hoof prints afterwards, trailing off over what seemed to me to be a death drop to the Ted Morris valley below...

Up Close and Personal

Monday, August 13, 2007

As cozy as that crevasse looks, the sound of rolling boulders and collapsing ice was unnerving enough to keep me on solid ground...

Unuk Finger

Friday, August 10, 2007

The Unuk Finger, at over 2300 metres in elevation, is the highest point for miles around. The peak is encircled by glaciers; all but one arrete on its northwest slope is buried in ice. That doesn't stop the intrepid mountain goats, though. A flyby of the peak last week revealed several sets of tracks in the snow, all the way up to the summit.

I've been leaving my DA 10-17 Fisheye in camp the last few days, in favour of my old-school Pentax-M 50mm 1.7. It can be a pain not having the ultrawide angle of the fisheye, but the old 50 is far and away the sharpest lens in my kit, a quality that makes it perfectly suited for when I have black-and-white in mind...

Website issues...

Wednesday, August 8, 2007

So, I found out a few days ago that my main site, www.andrewstrain.com, fell victim to a catastrophic server failure (something along those lines, I'm a photographer, not an IT nerd :-P) that resulted in the loss of, well... everything. Not that there was much to andrewstrain.com other than 5 photos and the promise that a full site was forthcoming...

At any rate, I've been putting off developing a proper portfolio/gallery site for quite some time now, and this looks to be a perfect kick-in-the-ass to jumpstart that project. So, sometime this fall, look for andrewstrain.com to be in full operation (which will include print sales, for those that have been inquiring). In the meantime, this blog will take the place of andrewstrain.com, until the new site is ready to launch...

Also, I'll be fiddling with the layout around here for the next little while. If things start looking lame, or you have a brilliant idea about how I can improve the presentation/functionality of my blog, let me know! Full Post and Comments

Ted Morris

The Ted Morris Glacier, over a kilometre wide at the first bend, is the largest glacier in my general area and the northern lobe of the Frank Mackie Glacier, which stretches 40km south to the Alaska border.
