I know, I know, Longboat was in September.

For those that don't know, Day of the Longboat is one of the University of British Columbia's signature intramural events. Below is a description of the race, taken from UBC REC:

Day of the Longboat is a ten-man voyager canoe race along the waters of Jericho Beach. Teams race East from the Jericho Sailing Center to a point on Jericho beach where one person leaps from the boat, collects a baton from the beach, and then hops back into the boat. The boats then return to Jericho Sailing Center and this same person gets out of the boat and rings a gong, signaling the completion of the race. Semi-finals and finals follow the heats with awards given out in a ceremony on the beach.

Naturally, because it's against the laws of nature for me to borrow a $2000 lens in good weather (see my previous post), race day brought torrential rain and high winds to the lower mainland, which led to many a capsized canoe.

All three North Shore mountains opened this weekend, with Mount Seymour hosting the Rome Snowboards Premature Jibulation park session/contest. Shredders of all ages made their way to the mountain to take part in the early season jibfest to compete for some Rome gear and, more importantly, shake off some of the rust that built up during the off season.

I probably looked a little out of place, shooting such a low key event with a Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR (big thanks to Kellan for letting me run around in the snow with his baby), but photographers get rusty in the off season too. This event was a great way to get "back in shape" for a season of shooting snowsports; the conditions may not have been ideal for photography (who am I kidding... they were downright brutal) but I had a blast regardless, and I'm sure everyone else that came out did, too.

This guy took everyone by surprise (including me... I couldn't get a decent photo) when he started busting out backflips over the barrel bonk.



At the end of the session, the winners were awarded comically large cheques with no monetary value...
