Monarch Mtn
Tuesday, July 7, 2009
My spot in Atlin may be a little out of town, but it gives me a convenient head-start on the Monarch Mtn trail. I hauled up the trail last night, grouse grind style, to shoot some photos from the alpine at sunset. There's no tram down to ease the knees, but there's plenty of light to navigate by well after the sun finally disappears. Besides, you don't get views like this from Grouse...
Looking south to Warm Bay and Teresa Island:
The town of Atlin:
The distinctive Mt Minto can be seen in the distance, rising above the north end of a glistening Atlin Lake...

Lakes and Rainbows
Friday, June 19, 2009
I finally bought my fishing license yesterday, so naturally, I spent all evening on the lake trying to catch some supper. I even managed to find the time to play with my new neutral density filter and make some longer exposures in between casts. There's plenty of daylight to do both up here (tomorrow is the longest day of the year, with nearly 18 hours of theoretical sun): the alpenglow shot was taken just after 11pm.
This is Como lake, a couple km's north of Atlin. My current address is at the base of Monarch Mountain, in the background - haven't hiked it since I've been here, but I've flown over a couple times on the way to/from work... close enough, right?
In the full post, you can see what happens to tasty rainbow trout when they die...
My sister caught the first fish of the day... I evened the score later.
Back at home, ready for gutting:
It'd been a while since I cleaned a fish, but I think I did alright.
Trout with a side of salmon? Yes please.
Picked clean:

A pair of older photos
Monday, September 1, 2008
I've been going through my library lately, looking at old photos as I put together a shortlist of images for the portfolio/website that I'm currently working on. I haven't posted much this summer, so I figured I'd follow up my last post fairly expediently with a couple photos: one from May, and a new take on an old favorite from nearly 2 years ago.
Enjoy.

Wedgemount Lake
Wednesday, July 23, 2008
I spent last weekend up in Whistler (another post on that coming soon), and instead of trying to find a couch to surf, I brought my backpacking gear along and hauled myself up to Wedgemount Lake for a night. The 1200m vert trail is a real heart-starter (Grouse what?) on the way up, and a knee-breaker on the way down, but the east-west orientation of the valley makes for some great light at sunset.
Continue reading for more photos:
----
The campground has ~20 sites in two different areas; a handful of tent pads and a small hut at one end of the lake that provide a great view of the whole valley,
while the rest of the sites are further along and right beside the lake:
It was fairly busy when I rolled in so I ended up all alone at the far end of the campground, which is probably a good thing... I'm not sure the other campers would've appreciated my tent-strobisting:
This shot is two exposures blended together to simulate the effect of a graduated neutral density filter, something I've never really tried before. I think it turned out alright; unfortunately, my poverty wizard wouldn't trigger the strobe in my tent from this far away:
One more alpenglow shot:
I know Wedgemount Lake is a place I'll return to many times, now that I know its there...

Green Lake - Updated
Sunday, July 6, 2008
I've been up in the Cariboo for the past couple days, working on a short drilling reclamation job. It's tough to learn the landscape in such a short period in time, but every now and then, the photo comes to you. This is why my camera is never more than a couple seconds away:
---
The rainbow lasted less than 5 minutes, and the almost-mammatus formation was deteriorating quickly. I charged back to the house (Leyland's B&B, on Green Lake), threw on the telephoto, and ran back out into the yard with a little time to spare...
This image was processed in Lightroom, on my (calibrated but still inaccurate) laptop lcd. I have a feeling I'll want to change a few things once I get home.
**UPDATE**
Changed the photo on the main page after seeing it on my trusty desktop display. Just for reference, here's what I originally posted:
